Showing my proof copy to friends and family quickly showed one weakness in the book, "no pictures then"? Production costs and obtaining copyright did not feature in their comment. Taking this well-meant criticism on board the website entered into the second phase "to be the visual companion to the book".
With the appropriate consent, I started to add full-colour pictures, and Utube videos of castles, etc. Images of Castles began to compliment the website text bringing life into the de Lacy story.
In the meantime de Lacy Chronicles had been shown by my wife Marjorie to the management of Wakefield Libraries. The combination of support for local authors plus Wakefield Council, also being the managers of Pontefract Castle on behalf of the Crown, led to an order for a quantity of the de Lacy Chronicles book which is now available on the shelves of their library branches.
Many of the branch libraries responded by requesting "would I visit and give a talk"? Putting everything else on hold, I created an illustrated powerpoint presentation entitled "the de Lacy family founders of Pontefract Castle" which can now highlight my talk to any size audience. While this activity may have slowed down my activity within this blog and website, it has proved an exhilarating opportunity to react face to face with local people who are interested in the de Lacy family and or the history of Pontefract Castle. Even more important; what are the plans and future events coming to the castle?
Back at the castle Marjorie and I met up with our first UK couple David and Susan Lacey visiting from Australia, on a UK tour of de Lacy Castles. They had taken up our offer shown from this site for a personal guided tour. Having spent a most enjoyable day with David and Susan, I realised they were not alone in making "the de Lacy tour". To do justice to both the book and the website I needed to ensure that visiting de Lacy tourists to these shores had a comprehensive website where they may find inclusive help in planning their UK de Lacy trip. So the site took yet another turn to include up to date information on all de Lacy castles.
The site is now moving ahead again, from the short-term promotional vehicle to a longer term centre of de Lacy knowledge. We would love to include your own either de Lacy family news or reminisces following your visits to de Lacy Castle sites.
